As the end of March nears, excitement builds on our campus as we gear up for several new events in April. If you own a motorcycle you won’t want to miss the inaugural Heartspring Poker Run April 5 sponsored by the Gypsy Motorcycle Club. The Autism CARE Walk at Heartspring is April 12. If you are unable to walk at Heartspring, don’t worry, you can still participate as a Virtual Walker. On April 25, the Heartspring Conference Series presents Current and Emerging Practices with Children and Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder with University of Kansas professor Dr. Richard Simpson. The month of April has something for everyone at Heartspring. We look forward to seeing you on campus.

Activities Can Teach

We have all seen children skipping across a playground, but for some children, skipping is a very difficult skill to acquire.  It requires balance, coordination and the ability to hop on both the left and the right foot.  If a child has trouble learning to skip, try breaking the activity down in parts.

This is only one of many activities that may help a child learn to skip. Learn more about this activity.

ShaeShae came to the Heartspring School when she was just six years old.  At age five, she was asked to leave her public school due to her challenging behaviors.  Some people in Shae’s life had all but given up on the tiny bright-eyed child with long brown hair, but her parents were steadfast; they knew that Shae could learn. Learn more about Shae.

From the President
Gary W. Singleton, Ph.D.Earlier this month four members of the Heartspring family traveled to China sharing ideas and resources as well as providing on-site training at our sister school, Stars and Rain Education Institute for Autism. Despite a language barrier, we learned from each others compassion, experience and hope for a better future for children with autism.

April is Autism Awareness Month and through The Autism CARE Walk, we can help hundreds of families affected by autism. Meet Zane, a little boy with a heart warming smile who, thanks to local resources including Heartspring, can now tell his parents “I love you”.

You can help Zane reach his fundraising goal of $10,000 - will you?

Gary W. Singleton, Ph.D.
