TEACCH specialists provide training at Heartspring

Dr. Steve Love and Galene Fraley from The University of North Carolina Division TEACCH visited Heartspring’s campus June 9th-12th to provide training on the Structured Teaching Model for students with autism. Heartspring teachers as well as other local teachers and professionals attended the four day training. The training targeted teaching strategies that included presentations and visual examples of working with children and young adults with autism. Participants gained hands-on experience with various materials in small groups encouraging team problem solving skills. The topics included an overview of the characteristics of autism, informal assessment, structured teaching, and behavior management. Strategies learned will definitely be of benefit to Heartspring staff as they continue to develop individualized supports for all students.
