Multi-Sensory Environment

Multi-sensory environment roomWatch Video Multi-Sensory Environment Room at HeartspringThe multi-sensory environment room (MSE) is a specially designed room based on the premise that everyone needs stimulation, offering students visual, auditory, tactile and olfactory stimulation via a variety of lights, gently stimulating music, aromas and tactile objects. The equipment is designed to promote relaxation, enjoyment and exploration as well as provide a learning environment for children with special needs. Each student’s experience can be relaxing, stimulating and interactive and can range from passive enjoyment to active decision making. Multi-sensory rooms are dedicated to relaxation and/or work. Stimulation in this environment can be manipulated, intensified, reduced or combined with other stimuli.

The K.T. Wiedemann Foundation generously provided the funds for the K.T. Wiedemann Multi-Sensory Room at Heartspring. The MSE was designed to provide expanded therapeutic and educational experiences for autistic students, guided by IEP goals. This room helps to reduce agitation and anxiety that lead to maladaptive behaviors (aggression, self-injury). Students find ways to deal with their sensory needs on their own—the K.T. Weidemann MSE provides an environment to do just that.
